ALEX HANK

Alex Hank / Mexico City, Mx 1973

Alex Hank stems from several notions regarding the widespread uses of imagery, including the artist’s interest in portraiture, popular culture, social media, pornography and self-representation. The synthesis of his investigation is expressed both conceptually and formally in the form of a series of embroideries, solid crystal objects, and neon works, all subjects of this exhibition.

Portraiture has been a seminal genre throughout Hank’s career, and much of his early production is related to the depiction of individuals. Representing the sitter in various forms, his direct approach to portraiture peaked with the series Roommates (2009-2012.) Up to and including that series Hank had followed the straightforward process of identifying the sitter, photographing it, and transferring the image to canvas. The result was a series of powerfully expressive, painterly large-scale portraits of friends, celebrities and other subjects.
