Emma Molina Gallery has the pleasure of presenting Nekyia by artist Claudia Baez. Baez's paintings are animated by reverence for the history of Western art, rendered in a contemporary expressionistic vocabulary. In her most recent exhibition, Nekyia, she enters into a pictorial dialogue with the works of some of the greatest artists from the past six centuries. Nekyia references an ancient Greek ritual by which ghosts were summoned and questioned about the future. In this case, the spirits that Baez conjures are the subjects of iconic paintings by Goya, Le Brun, Vélazquez, Gainsborough and Bronzino. The end result reflects a process of selection, re-creation and adoption of the details of these masterpieces, creating a sort of deeply intuitive hybrid between the historic and the contemporary.
